The upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract is the site of many disorders, usually related to diet, environment and heredity. These disorders can develop into a variety of diseases or symptoms, which can be diagnosed with a procedure called an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy or EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy).
By visually examining the upper intestinal tract using a lighted, flexible endoscope, gastroenterologists can diagnose:
During an EGD, other instruments can be passed through the endoscope to perform additional procedures if needed. These procedures could include a biopsy, in which a small tissue specimen is obtained for microscopic analysis, or removal of a polyp or tumor using a thin wire snare and electrocautery (electrical heat).
EGD with EMR (Endoscopic Mucosal Resection)
EMR is performed during an upper endoscopy (EGD) to remove abnormal or precancerous tissue from the lining of the esophagus or stomach. A solution is injected under the lesion to lift it, and it is then removed using a snare. It offers a non-surgical option for early GI cancers.
EGD with RFA (Radiofrequency Ablation)
This procedure treats conditions like Barrett’s esophagus by applying heat energy to remove damaged or precancerous tissue from the esophagus lining. It is typically performed during an upper endoscopy and helps reduce the risk of esophageal cancer.
EGD with ESD (Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection)
ESD is a technique that allows for the precise removal of larger or deeper abnormal growths from the esophagus or stomach. Unlike EMR, ESD enables removal in one piece, which helps with complete excision and accurate diagnosis, often eliminating the need for surgery.
EGD with EndoFLIP
EndoFLIP is a diagnostic tool used during upper endoscopy to measure the flexibility and function of the esophagus or stomach. It helps diagnose swallowing disorders, reflux, and motility issues by analyzing how the digestive tract responds to pressure and movement.
